Would you be concerned if you saw a small crack in your foundation? Many homeowners think that a small crack will not cause any harm, particularly within a short amount of time. Most people we talk to think, “oh, I have about 5 years or so until I need to worry.” That is not the always the case. Basement Authority of West Virginia has seen a small crack turn into foundation failure in the matter of two weeks!

Small Cracks Can Cause Big Damage

We recently received a call from homeowners concerned about a small crack in the foundation of their home. Our specialist arrived and could immediately see the left rear wall had failed. The wall was rotating away from the house and had completely fallen; the footer was also compromised. Within two weeks, the small crack had turned into a foundation failure. Our specialist inspected further and could see that the hillside was slipping away from the rear corner of the home and several other areas of the foundation were starting to show cracks.

Unfortunately, we were not able to assist the homeowners with their foundation failure–it was too late. If you start to see crack in your foundation, we highly recommend having your foundation inspected. It will give you peace of mind.

So how can you know if your foundation will fail and what does that mean? If your home has structural damage, your foundation is at risk and is no longer able to support your home. You can keep an eye out for warning signs and call us to inspect your foundation.

There are foundation warning signs you should keep an eye out for:

Inside:

  • Sticking doors or windows
  • Bowed walls
  • Horizontal, vertical, stair-step cracks
  • Cracks where the wall and floor meet
  • Uneven floors
  • Bowed Walls
